Well, it did redirect the permalinks on the site. But I was oblivious at the time to think outside the site. But didn’t find out a couple weeks down the road and 843+ broken links later!

Why didn’t you notice it right after you changed the permalink?

The links on the main page of my site redirected. The pagination (numbering or ‘older post/newer post’ at bottom of blog posts page) worked just fine. Links on my Navigation bar were okay.

It wasn’t until I used Google search that I found the broken links. Tons of 404 errors. I freaked out! Especially when you know your ad network revenue is based off impressions.

Then I quickly calmed my nerves, after telling myself all I can do here forward, is to fix the problem.

I now want to share with you How to Change Permalinks in WordPress without breaking links so I can save you tons of trouble and heart ache.

Change Permalinks in WordPress

Originally, I had mine set on ‘Day and Name’ option.
I changed it to reflect ‘category’ and ‘post name’. This made for a short URL – much more user friendly.

TIP: Go to WP dashboard > Settings > Permalinks > Common Settings

301 Redirect

After discovering the problem. I had to do a 301 redirect and didn’t want to touch my .htaccess file.

So I tried the Advanced Permalink WP Plugin. I knew the developer wasn’t working on the plugin anymore, but since I wanted a simple 301 redirect for my permalinks I didn’t think it would be a problem. Unfortunately, it broke my site. I didn’t realize that until a few days later. Oi! One thing after another. My pagination broke. You could not go past page 1!

Luckily, I traced the issue to the plugin and disabled it. Pagination worked again. But I wouldn’t be able to resolve the pagination problem due to the developer no longer working on it.

Resolution: The Simple 301 Redirect Plugin by Scott Nelle

I already had it installed on my site and finally remembered it. And luckily, it quickly resolved my wordpress permalink problem.

Installation

1) Go to the Plugins tab, Add New. Search for ‘simple 301 redirects’.
2) Install
3) Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress
4) Go to Settings > 301 Redirects

Request: add old permalink structure.
Destination: new permalink structure.

Note: Don’t copy the example link under Permalink settings (ie. http://www.yourURL.com/2012/06/03/sample-post/). You need to format the URL example to reflect the WordPress Permalink Structure Tags (example: /%year%/%monthnum%/ %day%/%postname%/)

5) Save
6) Do a Google search. Your outside links should now be fixed.

Final Note: if you have a sitemap (which you should) – manually reindex it. You can also do this in Google webmaster tools under Optimization > Sitemaps > select sitemap > resubmit.

Eventually, when your site gets crawled again by Google, it will fix the links. There is no determined set of time on how long it will take. Just be patient.

As for sitemap info… that’s a whole other post.

1. CalendaGram – An Apple app available in the Apple Store online, this allows you to connect to your Instagram account. From there, you select 12 photos to use as calendar images. Fully customizable, you select which photos you want for which months. These can be sent to yourself or to your friends and family. This is an awesome deal at only $24.99, as well. 2. Snapseed - is easy to use and offers excellent photographic effects. Snapseed provides access to photo editing tools that are surprisingly powerful through an intuitive gesture-based user interface. Snapseed gives an instant view of your edits, making it easy to glide through a variety of filters and enhancements and see the results in real time. 4. Wordfoto - makes typographic poster design easy and accessible to designers and amateurs alike. 5. Filtermainia - allows easy experimentation with a variety of filters that can be applied to both live images (the application opens the iPhone’s camera upon startup) or existing images. 6. Angryletters iPhone app is a fun and simple application that can be used quickly and easily by kids and adults alike. After the desired text has been entered, Angryletters offers the option to choose the sets of paper and letters that are to be used in the image. A preview image ensures that the desired effect has been achieved, and sharing via e-mail, Facebook and Twitter is easy. The application even includes instructions for sending a real card featuring the image that has been created.



7. Super Retro  – is another cool I app I recently found, too. It makes it easy to add retro styling to images taken using the application’s quick, versatile camera. Super Retro allows supreme detail to be pulled from images using separate focus and exposure, as well as a unique “enhance” effect that brings superior detail to the dark areas within a photo. Preset effects and filters offer the opportunity to quickly enhance images. In depth customization options are also provided, and multiple effects and filters can be layered within any image using a simple control system. New filter packs offered through the applications upcoming store ensure that the photographic editing power of this application will only continue to improve.
8. Picfx  – is an exciting app I recently discovered. It quickly applies high quality effects to photographic images. Picfx features a number of different frames and filters. The extent to which an effect is applied to an image can be easily adjusted using an intuitive slider. This feature, when combined with the ability to layer frames and filters within a single image, results in a powerful photo editing application that allows for unique photo customization options. The addition and removal of effects is simple, and the final image can be saved to a camera roll in high resolution. Photos can also be shared publicly through the application using an extended variety of social media and photo sharing services.
9. Halloween Booth -  is a spooky photo manipulation application that makes it fun and easy to paint frightening Halloween masks on faces within photographic images. Halloween booth can be used within a live image from the iPhone camera or an existing image. The application provides a variety of ways to dress up a person’s face with Halloween-themed paint, masks and accessories. Halloween Booth then provides an easy means of sharing the spooky creations via e-mail, Facebook and Twitter.
10. Postal Pix – while its not specific to Instagram, I thought it was worth mentioning. Postal Pix allows you to order prints of your iPhone photos directly from your phone. No hassle. No transferring fies. If you alter your IG settings to save the original or filtered photo to your phone, then you will be able to use Postal Pix for Instagram photos. And their prices are pretty reasonable.

Extragram - Created with the idea that there are many beautiful Instagram photos out there that should be easily shareable and viewable by the public. And the best part of all? Statigram is a free program! 

Webstagram – This is an Instagram web viewer. Keep up on your favorite IG users right at your PC. Webstagram offers you the ability comment from your PC/MAC to IG when you sign up/login to their site.  What I do enjoy about Webstagram is the ease in grabbing an Instagram link (by clicking the ‘O’ on a specific picture) when I need it for social sharing.

Inkstagram - Is another leading web interface for IG users (much like Extagram). In addition to other web interface programs, with Inkstagram you can create # hashtag albums to to group your favorite topics and make new friends.
